Thank you quotes

By: Susan Dugdale  Last modified: 03-20-2019 First published: 01-01-2009

- 38 quotations to help you say "thank you" meaningfully

These thank you quotes come from many sources.

It's my hope you'll find the collection useful for picking out a special phrase, or two, to include in either a note or a speech.

I've found a quotation is a great alternative to a long string of: "Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you ..." which becomes tediously boring to listen to, or read, especially if you have a long list of people to acknowledge. After all any word said over, and over again, tends to lose its initial impact and meaning!

A well-chosen quotation will help keep your thanks interesting to listen to, as well as meaningful for the first, and last person, on your list.

How to use a quotation in your speech

Below the quotes, near the bottom of the page, you'll find an example showing how to work one neatly into your text.

Getting from thank you quote to speech

Obviously you can either use the quotes as they are, or adapt them to suit your purpose!

However, whatever you choose to do with them do acknowledge the person whose words you're using.

Most of these quotations are well known. If you don't use the person's name people may think you're trying to pass their words off as your own. That could be awkward, embarrassing or even damaging for you.

Example of how to use a quote in a speech

Here's quote number 5 integrated into part of a "thank you" speech to illustrate. I've used it as the reason leading to thanking three people for their support.

"The English writer G.B. Stern said  "Silent gratitude isn't much use to anyone" and I agree with her.

I want to shout my thanks out loud. I want everyone to know and hear how much the support of Tom, Brad and Harry means to me. But more than that, I want them to know.

Tom you were there for me 200%. You shared your expertise and time unstintingly.

Brad, we've been mates since kindergarten. You give me that rare combination of loyalty, humor and honesty. You keep me on track, laughing and true - a real friend.

Harry, you're a marvel. Patient and practical. You listen, you understand and find solutions where others would only see problems."

The best selection of Thank You Quotes, Messages and Sayings with Thank you quotes can help us appreciate all the wonderful things that.

If you’re sitting at a computer reading these words, you probably have a lot to be grateful for.

But even though you have access to the world’s information at your fingertips, and more knowledge than all the kings and their wise men of history had at their disposal, it’s easy to take our lives for granted and focus on the things we don’t have.

As a group, we humans have a tendency to always want more. Often, we only realize what we had once it’s gone.

Learning to be thankful and regularly expressing gratitude is an important part of personal happiness. Being thankful gives us an appreciation for what we have. Even when you don’t feel like you have much to be thankful for, it can be humbling to realize that there is someone out there in this world of 6 billion people who would look at your life and trade places with you in a heartbeat.

Reading gratitude quotes can be one way to remind yourself that you have a lot to be thankful for. Another way is to keep a daily gratitude journal – everyday, write down 5 things you’re thankful for.

Some days, you’ll have a lot to be thankful for, and 5 entries won’t feel like nearly enough. Other days, coming up with 5 items may be a struggle – all you might be able to show appreciation for is the fact that you’re breathing, or the morning coffee you get to enjoy before you face a difficult day.

Nonetheless, forcing yourself to come up with 5 items and expressing daily gratitude for the positive things in your life will make you a happier person.

Here are some of the top “thank you” quotes we could find to remind us just how much we have to be thankful for.

Attitude of Gratitude

Developing an attitude of gratitude means more than saying a brief thank-you when someone does something nice for you. According to Psychology Today, “Gratitude is about feeling and expressing appreciation: for all we’ve received, all that we have (however little it may be), and for all that has not befallen us.” It can change our perspective, diffuse feelings of self-pity and self-centeredness, impatience, intolerance, negative judgment, indignation, anger, or resentment. Gratitude can also increase feelings of well-being, and prompt mindfulness.

But we should also be grateful for the learning experiences and opportunities to grow that trials and difficult times have offered us. Ram Dass has been quoted as saying: “When I look back on the suffering in my life, this may sound really strange, but I see it now as a gift. I would have never asked for it for a second. I hated it while it was happening and I protested as loudly as I could, but suffering happened anyway. Now, in retrospect I see the way in which it deepened my being immeasurably.”

Though it can be hard to find positivity in a negative situation, adopting an attitude of gratitude – being thankful for all things – can make all the difference to your outlook, your health, and your relationships with others.

“Gratitude will shift you to a higher frequency, and you will attract much better things.” – Rhonda Byrne

It’s always a good idea to say thank you when someone lends you a hand at work or helps you with your job search. Not only will you be expressing your gratitude, but it'll also help you maintain a strong professional relationship with that person.

Tips for Saying Thank You

When in doubt, say thank you. There are many situations in which it is a good idea to follow up with a thank-you note. You should say thank you whenever a colleague helps you out, after an informational interview or job interview, when someone writes you a letter of recommendation, and in many other professional situations. Not sure if you should send a note? Err on the side of sending one – it never hurts to say thank you.

Consider the format. When saying thank you, you can choose between a handwritten note, a letter, or an email. An email is more informal and is best when you want the person to receive your note as soon as possible.

For example, if a hiring manager is going to make a decision right after your interview, you might want to email him or her for the sake of time. Consider a handwritten note when you have more time and want to give the note a personal touch.

Keep it short and sweet. In the letter, you want to state what specifically you are thanking the person for.

Is it for writing you a letter of recommendation or for a time a coworker covered your shifts when you had to take time off? State the specific reason but keep the note short. One to three paragraphs are usually all you need.

Use quotes. If you are struggling with what to say in your note, use the quotes below as a starting point. You’ll have to tailor them to fit your personal circumstances. This might include changing some of the language in the quote or adding more information. You will also want to begin your note with a salutation and end with a closing and your signature.

Thank you quotes

By: Susan Dugdale | Last modified: 03-20-2019 | First published: 01-01-2009
