It is so easy to get caught up in everyday life. We worry about grades, jobs, relationships and just about everything else. We are always so focused on the big things going on in our lives that sometimes we forget just how amazing the little things can be. It is so easy to brush past something small that made us smile. It is time to stop that! This one goes out to all the little things that go unnoticed or under-appreciated. Thank you for always trying to turn a bad day around.

Thank you for always being there when I need you more than I realize. There is something so comforting about hearing your favorite song come on the radio after a really long day. It always warms my heart when a stranger makes sure to smile at me. Sometimes we just need to open our eyes and see what is going on around us. People love to completely block out the world and just focus on themselves. It can be truly amazing to walk down the street and see a little girl interact with her dad. Who doesn’t love seeing two people that clearly haven’t seen each other in a long time run up and hug each other? Nothing beats being able to first hand witness a proposal.

While some of those things that I listed are still pretty big, they can be easily missed unless you’re paying attention. Something as small as giving a person on the street a hot meal, seeing a veteran and saying thank you, or watching how happy a couple can be, after being married for over 60 years, all make me so happy. For me, all of these things can make me forget about everything that is going on in my life. I forget for a second about the terrible day I am having, and I just start to smile. Something as little as a smile can completely turn my day around. I know that I don’t have enough reminders to smile, I forget how important and meaningful a smile can be.

Thank you for the little things that make me smile. Thank you for knowing when I need you most. Thank you for always being the real MVP.

A relationship is built around love, trust, and appreciation. And I know there are times where I doubt myself, which in return results in doubting the trust within the .

If the only prayer you ever said was “Thank You,” that would be enough.

Most of us have incredible family members, friends, and other loved ones who love us back.  Learn to appreciate what a miracle that is.  Most of us have good health, which is another miracle.  Most of us have eyes, with which to enjoy the amazing miracles of sunsets and nature and beauty all around us.  Most of us have ears, with which to enjoy music – one of the greatest miracles ever.

We may not have all these things, because we can’t have everything, but we certainly have plenty to be thankful for.  To an extent, we know this already, and yet we forget.

Sometimes Marc and I get so caught up pursuing the next big thing, that we forget to pause and appreciate the things we have, and the things we’ve experienced, learned and achieved along the way.

In other words, we forget to give thanks continuously, for all things.  Since every step we have taken has led us right to where we are, and all things have contributed to our development, when we finally do pause to give thanks, we try to include ALL things in our gratitude.

So that’s what I want to reflect on today – some quick reminders about the things you, too, likely forget to say “thank you” for:

  1. “Thank you for life’s surprises.” – Notice and cherish life’s surprises.  Just because it’s not what you were expecting, doesn’t mean it’s not everything you’ve been waiting for.  So take a deep breath when you’re rejected from something good.  It often means you’re being redirected to something better.  Be patient.  Be positive.  Keep going.
  2. “Thank you for the truth I deal with every day.” – Too many of us prefer gentle lies to hard truths.  But make no mistake, in the end it’s better to be hurt by the truth than comforted by a lie.  And beware of half-truths too – you may have gotten ahold of the wrong half.  Open your eyes.  You must see things how they are instead of how you hoped, wished or expected them to be.  Sometimes it’s hard to accept the truth when the lies were exactly what you wanted to know, but be strong.  Life is too short to live a lie.
  3. “Thank you for the tough times that taught me important lessons.” – God allows you to experience the low points of life in order to teach you lessons that you could learn no other way.
  4. “Thank you for the challenges I must overcome today.” – The brick walls in life are there for a reason.  They are not there to keep you out.  They are there to give you a chance to show how badly you want something.  Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it as badly as you do.  They are there to stop the other people.  There is absolutely nothing about your present circumstances that prevents you from making progress, one step at a time.  (Read The Last Lecture.)
  5. “Thank you for giving me the courage to continue.” – Courage isn’t having the strength to go on; it’s going on even when you don’t have strength.  And remember, it does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.
  6. “Thank you for giving me the strength to smile.” – Anyone can be happy sometimes.  It takes a human being with real heart to make beauty out of the stuff that naturally makes us weep.
  7. “Thank you for the beauty that remains.” – Even when times are really tough, don’t think of all the misery, but of the beauty that still remains.
  8. “Thank you for this new beginning I’m living now.” – The best way to prepare for the future is to take care of the present.  Goodbyes will always hurt a little.  Photographs can never replace the act of being there.  Memories, good and bad, will sometimes bring tears.  And words can never perfectly describe the feelings they represent.  But that’s OK.  Pain is real.  But so is hope.  You have to make peace with your past in order to keep your present and future from becoming hopeless battles.
  9. “Thank you for all the choices I have.” – A big part of your life is a result of the little choices you make every day.  If you don’t like some part of your life, it’s time to start tweaking things and making better choices, right now, right where you are.  (Marc and I discuss this in more detail in the “Goals and Success” chapter of 1,000 Little Things Happy, Successful People Do Differently.)
  10. “Thank you for the chance to grow.” – You must be willing to give up what you are in order to become what you will be.
  11. “Thank you for my bravery.” – Whenever you’re scared but you still do it anyway, that’s brave.
  12. “Thank you for my inner greatness.” – Contrary to what others may say, you do not need to rise to the top, or be the cream of the crop, before you can feel great about yourself.  For you are not a failure because you’re not perfect, got rejected or laid off, struggle to make ends meet, or have a family with issues.  You are great because, despite your circumstances, you keep loving, you keep getting back up after every fall, and, above all, the little steps you keep taking, you take with grace.
  13. “Thank you for the burning desires inside me.” – The starting point of all success is DESIRE.  Keep this in mind always.  Weak desire brings weak results, just as a small fire creates a small amount of heat.  Never give up on something that you can’t go a day without thinking about.  When you truly believe in what you’re doing, it shows, and it pays.  Success in life is for those who are excited about where they’re going.
  14. “Thank you for my intuition and instincts.” – Take constructive criticism seriously, but not personally.  Listen, and then operate with your own intuition and wisdom as your guide.
  15. “Thank you for my imagination and creativity.” – Imagination and creativity are everything.  Together, they draw the preview of your life’s coming attractions.  And there are people in nearly every career field who make each day a work of art simply by the way they have mastered their craft.  In other words, almost everyone is an artist in some way.
  16. “Thank you for the excitement and freedom of my vulnerability.” – Being vulnerable is helpful to both ourselves and others.  It makes us bigger in the world – the more open we are, the more there is of us out there.  So open up.  Allow yourself to feel, to be real and authentic.  Tear down any emotional brick walls you have built around yourself and feel every exquisite emotion, both good and bad.  This is life.  This is how you welcome new opportunities.
  17. “Thank you for my feelings and emotions.” – The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they are felt only with the heart.
  18. “Thank you for giving me a voice.” – Remember, not being heard is no reason for silence.
  19. “Thank you for everyone I’ve ever met.” – We are a part of all that we have met.  And everyone you meet can teach you something important.  Some people bless us and some teach us.  All are necessary.  In fact, the people who are the most difficult to deal with can be your most valuable teachers in the long run, which is ultimately a blessing.
  20. “Thank you to everyone for being who they are.” – If you judge people, you have no time to appreciate them.  So pay close attention, and respect people for who they are and not for who you want them to be.  Loving and respecting others means allowing them to be themselves, whether you choose to be a part of their life or not.
  21. “Thank you for giving me the ability to love.” – Only those of us who are capable of loving deeply can also suffer deep sorrow, but this same necessity of loving serves to counteract our grief and heals us.  (Read The Gifts of Imperfection.)
  22. “Thank you for giving me someone to love.” – The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.  To love and win is the best thing in the world.  To love and lose, is the next best.
  23. “Thank you for giving me the sense to love myself too.” – Remember, putting yourself first does not mean being selfish – it means being self-aware.  It means not forgetting to love yourself, too.
  24. “Thank you for the solitude and space I need.” – Remember, it’s healthy to spend time alone sometimes.  You need to know how to be alone and not be defined by another person.
  25. “Thank you for the incredible people who have stood beside me.” – Know that it’s less important to have more friends and more important to have real ones.  And remember, it’s during the toughest times of your life that you’ll get to see the true colors of the people who say they care about you.  Don’t take these people for granted.  Look around and appreciate them, today.
  26. “Thank you for the power to give back and make a difference.” – The fact that you can plant a seed and it becomes a flower, share a bit of knowledge and it becomes another’s, smile at someone and receive a smile in return, is proof that YOU can make a big difference.
  27. “Thank you for life’s luxuries.” – You didn’t go to sleep hungry last night.  You awoke this morning with a roof over your head.  You had a choice of what clothes to wear.  You have access to clean drinking water and electricity.  You are online right now.  You have plenty to be comfortable.  Being wealthy is a mindset.  Want less and appreciate more.
  28. “Thank you for my home.” – A house is a home when it shelters the body and comforts the soul.  But a home isn’t always a physical structure, or a specific location on a map.  Home is wherever the people you love are, whenever you’re with them.  It’s not a defined place, but a space in your heart and mind that builds upon itself like little bricks being stacked to create something stable that you take with you for your entire life, wherever you may go.
  29. “Thank you for my health.” – You may not be perfectly healthy, but if you’re reading this, you’re likely reasonably healthy.  In other words, if you got sick today you could recover.  Never underestimate the gift of your health.  It’s the greatest wealth you will ever own.  It’s the foundation for every chance at happiness and success life has to offer.  Your body is the only place you will truly ever live.
  30. “And finally, thank you for giving me the ability to be online reading this.” – Not only are you wealthy enough to be online right now, but you can read too.  Believe it or not, only about one third of the world’s population has internet access.  And, even crazier than that, there are roughly 774 million people in the world who aren’t educated enough to read.  YOU are one of the lucky ones.

Your turn…

Dear my handsome boyfriend,

I know that most days I'm a handful or two, and I thank you for dealing with me through it all. There are many things you do every day that have become normal for me, and I seem to forget to thank you for. So here's a small appreciation post to thank you for everything you do for me and continue doing each day.

Thank you for the late night drives to see me because I needed a little extra lovin' that night. Thank you for treating my family like your own and welcoming me into yours as well. Thank you for the funny stories I will always be happy to tell. Thank you for the romantic efforts you make. Thank you for making normal days feel so special.

Thank you for making my best friends yours and yours mine. Thank you for the late night McDonald's trips, even when you get stuck in the line for 35-minutes. Thank you for our little pet we have together who is so spoiled and loved I can't even imagine what it'll be like when we have kids.

Thank you for talking me into calmness when I'm having a rough night. Or making me laugh when I didn't even feel like smiling. Thank you for making me believe that good guys really do still exist.

Thank you for making me feel like I am living a fairy-tale on the daily. Thank you for making me your queen and for being my king. Thank you for sacrificing your time elsewhere to spoil me with your presence.

Thank you for always answering the phone no matter the time or if I am happy or sad calling you! Thank you for being there for me before we were even together. Thank you for being my love but also my bestie when I need to gossip!

Thanks for keeping up with me and who I am or am not mad at each week. Thank you for buying me chocolate when you know its that time of the month. Thank you for choosing by default where we go to dinner because as it turns out it is apparently the hardest decision I have ever been asked to make.

Thanks for sitting through the treacherous journey of shopping through the mall just to leave with nothing. Thanks for constantly telling me how beautiful you think I am even after a double shift at work with worn off makeup and messy hair that stays in a ponytail even when I take out my elastic.

Thank you for all the foot rubs you have given me with unfulfilled promises to give you one back. Thanks for laughing at all my jokes that no one else found funny and even retelling them so I feel better.

Thanks for eating anything I cook for you and even posting a cute Instagram photo to make me feel good even though its just boxed mac and cheese. I am sure there are so many other things that you do for me, but these are just a few I never remember to say thank you for.

Love always,

Your partner in crime

Today, I want to give thanks to a few of the little things. The beautiful experiences that, although may only last a few moments at a time, are what.

Thank You Quotes

Though they may be slaying the spider in the bathtub instead of dragons, you know what it means to have found someone who saves you in little ways each day. Even princes need a few reminders that they are appreciated.

  1. Thank you for apologizing when I'm too stubborn to do so.

  • Thank you for taking situations that I come to you all frazzled and worked up about, and laying them out for me in this wonderful, logical, guy way that makes everything more clear.
  • Thank you for all of the dorky pictures I make you take with me, and then for not complaining when I post them all over social media for every one of your friends to most likely see.
  • Thank you for bear hugs, forehead kisses, and piggy back rides.
  • Thank you for knowing when to set me straight, and for telling me when you think I'm wrong.
  • Thank you for listening to me and my occasional rants.
  • Thank you for making me laugh when I need it most.
  • Thank you for loving my body the way it is, for never making me feel inadequate, but rather perfect for who I am.
  • Thank you for the little things that you do, like getting the car when it's cold or rainy.
  • Thank you for the moments you make it clear that you are proud of me. Whether it's a big grin after I've done something impressive or the way you present me to others like royalty, it means so much to me.
  • Thank you for every time you have to sit patiently and wait for me to get ready.
  • Thank you for being on my side when it feels like no one else is.
  • Thank you for the times you have went out of your way to do something romantic or sentimental because you knew it would mean the world to me.
  • Thank you also for the times those attempts ended up being more comical than anything for the both of us. The fact that you try is romantic enough, and if I ended the night laughing with you, it was a perfect one regardless.
  • Thank you for making me feel safe.
  • Thank you for vocalizing your opinions to me, and not being afraid to disagree.
  • Thank you for taking time to learn about and experience the things that I enjoy.
  • Thank you for being responsible and hardworking day in and day out.
  • Thank you for earning my trust and never misusing it.
  • Thank you for supporting me and my dreams, and never trying to hold me back from what I want in life.
  • Thank you for your patience on my moody days.
  • Thank you for knowing what's upsetting me before I even have to say anything.
  • Thank you for every time you had to venture into the foreign world of a jewelry store or women's clothing store to try to hunt down a gift for me.
  • Thank you for wanting to experience new things together and for expanding my horizons.
  • Thank you for the wonderful time we spend with our families.
  • Thank you for sitting through countless chick flicks and girl dramas.
  • Thank you for being my number one confidant. You are my ultimate secret keeper.
  • Thank you for trusting me.
  • Thank you for the little ways that you help me every day. Even the most minor of tasks or chores done just for the sake of helping me do not go unnoticed.
  • Thank you treating me respectfully at all times.
  • Thank you for all of the lazy days we spend just being best friends. Snacks, Netflix, and cuddling with you are ingredients to some of my favorite days.
  • Thank you for being vulnerable and open to me. I know as a man that can be very difficult to do, but it's developed a closeness that I value each moment I spend with you.
  • Thank you for being the one that sometimes gets the backlash of the harm that others cause. I know when I have a rough day; you often have to deal with my crankiness. For that, you are a saint.
  • Thank you for that look in your eyes that reminds me that I am yours. It reminds me of my connection with you, and that through it all, you really and truly see me.
  • Thank you for being the kind of man who does all of these things without a second thought. Thank you for being a man who doesn't require any kind of praise or gratitude for being a caring and trustworthy best friend to me.
  • Thank you for knowing that even if I don't always say it, I'm incredibly grateful for my handsome prince. Because with that big smile and heart of gold, you take down all of life's witches and dragons.
