Thank you mom for your support
September 25, 2019 Houseguest Thanks 4 comments

Dear Mom,

Over the years, I've thanked you for all the support you've given me in life -- for all the chorus and band recitals you sat through, for the birthdays and holidays you made special. I've thanked you for pushing me to be my best, for allowing me to do more and be more and experience more than you were allowed to do and be and experience as a kid.

But until I had kids of my own, I didn't know enough to thank you for the less noticeable "mom" stuff, the stuff I don't remember or couldn't understand until I experienced it firsthand. But now I have. So here goes:

Thank you, Mom, for enduring the anxiety and discomfort of pregnancy, and the pain and uncertainty and exhilaration and terror of labor, to bring me into the world. Thank you for all the nights you got up from your bed to come to mine and soothe me back to sleep. Thank you for the million tiny prayers you've sent up on my behalf, every day -- even now -- whenever you've read or seen something about a child being sick or lost or hurt or, God forbid, killed.

Thank you for all the times you surrendered yourself to fits of silliness, making funny faces and blowing raspberries on my tummy and dancing around the living room to make me giggle.

Thank you for wondering, "Is this right? Am I doing OK?", about a thousand times in quiet moments right before you fell asleep at night. Thank you for overcoming your frustrations when I was clingy or whiny or overtired or sick to keep caring for me when you felt like your deep well of mother's tenderness had surely run dry. Thanks for putting up with every diaper change I squirmed through, every bit of food I threw at you, and every time I spit up on a clean shirt you'd just put on.

Thank you for giving up your free time, surrendering your privacy, and setting aside some of the dreams you had as a woman to make room for all the new dreams you carried as a mother. Thank you for all the warm baths and bottles, all the practicing you did with me to say "Dada" and "Mama" and "milk." Thank you for holding onto my chubby fingers and helping me take my first steps, knowing I would eventually be walking away from you.

Thank you, Mom, for my siblings. Thank you for finding within yourself the ability to love all of us equally yet differently. And thank you for instilling in us respect for and allegiance to one another.

Thank you for working so hard to put food on the table for every meal, every day -- even when it was met with complaints or our downright refusal to eat it. And thank you for all those times you found yourself on your hands and knees picking up the food that was so carelessly dropped, spilled or thrown.

Thank you for enduring the exhaustion that comes with caring for more than one child in diapers. Thank you for all the juggling and cross-checking that took place just to get us out the door, or into bed. Thank you for dealing with all the extra splashing and water and chaos that come with bathing two children at the same time.

Thanks for folding laundry at midnight because that was the only free time you had to do it. And thanks for giving up whatever it was you would have liked to do with that precious free time, in favor of making sure your kids had clean clothes to wear the next day.

Thank you for bearing the days when the whining and fussing of multiple children seemed enough to send you running for the hills. Thank you for the sacrifices you made to be home with us as much as you could be, even in those tiny secret moments when you wished to be somewhere -- anywhere -- else.

Thank you for forcing us to share, but never making us feel like there wasn't enough of you to go around.

Thank you, Mom, for enduring endless hours of whining and fighting. Thanks for finding new and creative ways to break a tie, figure out who did what to whom, dispense punishment, dole out equal amounts of affection and somehow pay attention to more than one busy child at a time.

Thank you for teaching us that taking turns is one of the most important and universally necessary skills to have. And thanks for teaching us manners, Mom -- for instilling in us respect for every living thing and showing us how to be compassionate.

Thank you for introducing me to God, for praying with me and for me, and for helping me to recognize that still, small voice inside me that has so much power.

Thank you, Mom, for not completely losing your mind while potty training me.

Thank you for teaching me how to write my name, put on my own shirt, wash my hands... and all the other little skills you taught me when I was too little to thank you for them. Mostly, thanks for rejoicing in my growing independence and for knowing that it didn't mean I needed you any less.

Thanks for hanging in there once I figured out how to open, close and lock doors, jump, climb, run, plot, scheme, lie and hide. And thanks for putting up with every single debate over how many more bites of peas I had to eat before getting the cookie.

Thank you for loving me even when I was being annoying. (Especially when I was being annoying.)

Thank you for all the times you said, "I can't believe how big you're getting!" Back then, I just thought you meant I was getting taller, but now I know those words convey everything from pride and wonder to nostalgia and even sadness.

Thanks for pushing aside the self-doubt when it creeped in, and for hanging in there when you weren't sure you could. Thanks for the prayers you whispered and the tears I'm sure you shed, Mom, in quiet moments after losing your patience. Thank you for somehow hanging onto the belief that parenting is a journey and a process, not a test we pass or fail.

Thank you for living through me, for me and beside me, for carrying me when I needed you to (and sometimes when I didn't, but still whined to be held -- again, I'm so sorry for the whining!), and for letting me run ahead more often than you may have wanted me to.

Oh, and thanks for all the hugs and kisses I didn't ask for but got anyway. They were way better than all the treats and toys I begged for but didn't get.

Finally, thanks for teaching me the importance of sending thank-you notes. Once again, you were right.

Happy Mother's Day.

A Thank You Note to Moms

I was sitting and imagining what it would be like to receive a thank you from my kids.

We don’t become Moms for recognition or acknowledgement, we do it for the relationships we build with our children. We do it from a place of selfless, boundless love.

But we deserve to be thanked for our tireless, passionate, endless work as Moms. We don’t get sick days, personal days and we really don’t even get Mother’s Day off, do we?

So here is the thank you note every Mom should get. This is for you!

Never say you’re“just a mom”and know that your work is the most important there is!

Dear Mom –

Thank you for all you do for me and our family.

Thank you for picking up my socks, my Legos, my bouncy balls, my crayons, shoes, towels and cars, my books, my crafts, my underwear, my DS games, teddy bears, magic markers, my pajamas, more Legos, my Play Doh, my Squinkies, my hair clips, my slippers and all the things we leave in a path behind us everywhere around the house.

I know you spend a lot of your day just picking up the things we left around between coming home from school and going to bed. I  just wanted you to know I appreciate it!

Thanks for cooking for us, it must really take a lot of work to plan meals, to go to the grocery store, to read labels and pick the best foods to keep our bodies healthy. It must take a lot of time and energy to put the food into the cart, out of the cart to pay, into the cart, out of the cart to the car, out of the car, into the house, out of the bags and then into the pantry; all before you cook us dinner. Great job! (I’ll try not to say, “Eww” or “Yuck” anymore.)

I know that when you have rules and consequences, it’s because you love us, thanks for setting limits and disciplining me even though it’s no fun for you, even though it’s exhausting. It will help me learn and have good character.

Thanks for the years of cleaning up my boogers, my throw up and wiping my hiney. Thanks for teaching me to do those things for myself; and for teaching me to tie my shoes, get dressed on my own and use a real cup with no cover! I really needed you to help me grow up, Mom!

Thank you for teaching me to be organized, to do my homework, clean my room and to practice my instrument. I’m learning to be responsible which helps me feel positive about myself. Thanks for pushing me even when I complain and argue with you.

Thank you for not letting me quit the team when I wanted to. Sticking with it taught me to be a good sport, to follow through, and to persevere. I’ll need those skills to succeed in life.

Thank you for believing in me, encouraging me to do my best and to try new things.I love myself and I am proud of myself. I have confidence and I believe in myself because of you. Thank you for supporting my dreams and ideas, even when they seem far-fetched or silly to you. I need to make mistakes and have failures to grow, so thanks for being there when I’m down, and for helping me find my way back up.

Thank you for modeling how to be respectful, kind to others and patient with old people. I am always watching you. I watch you make eye contact when you talk, I watch you bring dinner to a sick friend and I see you taking care of yourself. Even though I don’t always LISTEN to you, I do always hear you. I hear how you use good manners, how you listen to a friend, how you laugh with grandma.

I admit, even though I’ve grumbled, I’m glad you drag us to volunteer to clean up the park or serve dinner to people in need. Because of your example, I understand the importance of service.

Thank you for being there to talk through problems and to ask you questions, any questions. Thanks for answering honestly about kissing and sex; and for explaining all those words I learned on the school  bus.

Thanks for making time for me. For stopping what you’re doing to listen to me. I know you’re busy, but that let’s me know that I’m valuable to you.

Mom, thanks for driving me all over the town and state to friends, tryouts, activities, performances, games, concerts, auditions and practices. I know I couldn’t do all these fun things without you. And thanks for driving home and back when I forget my LaCrosse stick for a LaCrosse game or my tennis racket for a tennis match. You’re the best, Mom! Oh, and thanks for cheering for me and showing up to watch me. Even when I don’t act like it, it really means a lot to have you there.

Thanks for volunteering in my school, for kissing me good-bye, even in front of my friends, and for hugging me when I come home. Thanks for reading with me and for making me read even when I moan.

Thanks for noticing when I do kind things, help around the house or make the right choice. I really like when you notice the good things I do, it makes me want to do more.

You’re teaching me life skills, you’re helping me learn how to become a happy and healthy adult one day. You’re giving me limits and structure but also space and confidence to step out toward independence.

You’re teaching me that my attitude and the way I look at life makes all the difference.

You’re doing an awesome job, Mom! Keep up the good work!

I love you. Thank you for loving me in all the ways that you do.

Thank you for humbling yourself to put my needs (and more often wants) above your own. Thank you for sacrificing innumerable hours to help.

Thank You Messages for Mom: For most mothers, sons and daughters, Mother’s Day is a one day affair after which all the love fizzles out when the daily humdrum of life takes over. Don’t let this happen to your sweet bond with your mom. Pick a random day and surprise her with a cute note. Whether it is with touching quotes that make her happy from within or funny one-liners that make her smile – say Thank You and show gratitude for all the sacrifices she has made for you. Unlike Mother’s Day, you don’t need to glam out with fancy greeting cards. Simple stuff like texts, Facebook posts, pins on Pinterest or even short tweets are all it takes to light up her day. For everything she has done for you, little things like these are the least you can do to start giving back.

1) Mom, as I grow up I am realizing that I fought with you so much. Even when, all you wanted was for me to win the fight with the demons inside my head. I love you.

2) Mom, all these years I kept asking and you kept giving. Now I think it’s time I started giving back and it all begins with two simple words – Thank You.

3) All this while I was complaining about having nothing, when in a mom like you, I had everything I could ever ask for. Thanks ma.

4) The World’s Best Mother is a book that ought to be written by its most qualified author – YOU. Thanks for everything mom.

5) If all the armies in the world were commanded by mothers like you, they would all be trained in decimating the enemy’s hate with adorable smiles and warm hugs. Thanks for everything mom.

6) Mom, I promise to live a life that will do justice to all the sacrifices you’ve made.

7) Metaphorically you are the programmer who has originally coded and constantly improved the operating system of my life. Thanks mom.

8) You gave up the most important things in your life so that I could take on the most important things in mine. Mom, thanks for all the sacrifices you have made.

9) Best friends come and go, boyfriends and girlfriends love and move on, bosses hire and fire but the only person present through it all is a mother. Thanks for always being there for me.

10) The only person who has stood by me through all life’s storms and bad weather, is none other than my amazing mother. Thanks ma.

11) One day, you will realize that your mom was the best friend you never knew you had. For me, that day has come. Thanks mom.

12) There is no force powerful enough to stop me, as long as I’ve got my mother pushing me. Thanks mom.

13) I don’t see our relationship as something which is biological. For me, your warm hugs are nothing short of magical. Through life’s rough patches you’ve made me feel secure. Mom, you have been nothing less than an angel for sure.

14) Mother’s Day can come and go, but my love for you will always show. I don’t need a commemorative occasion to remind me, to say thank you to my dearest mommy.

15) Life hasn’t always been fair, sometimes it has been very mean. I fell down along the way, I got wounds that couldn’t be seen. But through it all, my mom never left my side. Her love is the reason my tears have finally dried. Thanks mom.

16) Mom, it has taken me too long to realize that while everyone else was busy finding faults in me, you were busy trying to fix them. Thanks for everything.

17) From peer pressure to bullying and from success to failing, my mom can help me with just about everything. Thanks mom.

18) Thank You are the two words I want to use to show gratitude for the two words you have given me – Perfect Life. Thanks mom.

19) For you, I am going to replace my Hellos with Thank Yous. Because that’s the only way I can show enough gratitude for all the things that you do. Thanks mom.

20) Whenever I am in trouble I ask my heart ‘What should I do?’ Every single time it replies ‘Do what your mother would tell you to’. Mom, thanks for being my guiding light.

21) Mom, had I listened to your advice, I’d been at a better place today. Now, I promise to live a life, which drives that regret away. Thanks for putting up with me all these years.

22) Right from the day I was a toddler to the day I became a responsible young adult, you have tended to me endlessly. Mom, I can never thank you enough for everything you have done to make sure that my life turns out perfectly. Thanks.

23) There can never be a day so dull that can’t be brightened up with my mom’s loving smile. Thanks for everything ma.

24) Bad grades, bad company and bad habits – all these would have torn my life apart if it weren’t for a super glue called MOM who held it all together. Thanks mom.

25) Mothers like you are soft sponges which absorb their children’s tears and squeeze out pretty bubbles of happiness and joy. Thanks for everything mom.

26) I don’t know where to begin, I don’t know what to say. Thank you is a very small word, for the sacrifices you make every day. From your warm hugs to your reassuring smile – everything has made my life worthwhile.

27) Dysfunctional families, broken homes and bitter marriages would be history if there was a mother like you in every house. Thanks for everything mom.

28) Since you are a Fantastic mother and a Fabulous friend, from now on I will call you Fantabulous. Thanks for everything mom.

29) No school, college or university can teach the wisdom given to me by the best teacher in the world – my mother. Thanks mom.

30) I have always wondered how it would feel to receive a touching note from my kid, thanking me for being a good mother. While I wait, I don’t want to keep YOU waiting any longer. Thanks for everything mom.

31) In a day and age when happiness in life is measured in likes, retweets and shares, there is nothing more precious than the support of a mom who really cares. Thanks mom.

32) Everyone knows that I am you SON. But only I know that you are my SUN – lighting up my life with your hugs and smiles. Thanks mom.

33) If you don’t stop being an amazing mother even for a single day during the year, why should I thank you just Mother’s Day? Thanks ma.

34) Words like trouble, grounded, scold and punish have never been in my dictionary because I have a chilled out mom like you. Thanks for being super cool.

35) A mother’s love is gentler than a father’s, more tolerating than a sister’s, more accommodating than a brother’s. A mother’s love is simply the best, better than the rest.

36) The PUREST and TRUEST meaning of the word UNCONDITIONAL can only be found in a MOTHER’S LOVE. Thanks for everything mom.

37) Whenever life has thrown curve balls, you have helped me hit them out of the park. Thanks mommy.

38) Like turkey is to Thanksgiving and bunnies are to Easter, you are to me – INSEPERABLE. Mom, thanks for always being there.

39) Momma’s Boy is the one thing that I won’t mind being called even when I grow older because I am proud to have a mom like you.

40) The real meaning of the words True Love is not written in a dictionary, but in a mother’s heart. Thanks mom.

“We were expecting a nice funeral, but not all the extra special care and attention to detail you showed to my mother and our family…..thank you for all you did, and for the time you spent answering questions….”

“…I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making a very difficult time in my life so much easier.”

“Just want to thank you for the beautiful job you did.  We were very pleased.  Everything was nicely displayed – couldn’t ask for more….many thanks!”

“You folks are the best!  (We) want to extend our sincere gratitude for all you folks did….from the preparation years ago for her burial to whence you took her body away and returned to make her bed, leaving the beautiful poem “May I Go.”  It was not easy to let her go, however we were all reassured that mom was in the best professional, funeral home hands….”

“Thank you so much for everything you did for the Services for my mom…you guys are truly the best…”

“Thank you so much for your kindness and compassion that you showed our family at the time of our dad’s death.  You made a difficult time less stressful.  We truly appreciate your service.”

“When they asked what funeral home to contact, there was no hesitation – you have a reputation for professional yet personal services.  You and your staff exceeded that expectation.  When we stopped at the office, the staff could not be more accommodating.”

“Thank you Tom, Doug, Jim and Team for everything you did to celebrate my Dad’s life.”

“…You walked us through each step of the decision making, both personal and legal, performing much of the leg work thus lifting the burden off our shoulders.  Thank you for your patience with the many revisions…and extras you graced us with…..In a job that by its very nature is filled with sorrow and tears, each one of you bring a peace, joy, smile and comfort to those of us blessed by the service you provide.”

“The generosity and kindness you’ve shown our family has been such a blessing.  We cannot thank you enough.”

“…Your whole team is quite an asset to the community.  My thanks…for going above and beyond the call of duty to get and give information we needed…”
