Thank you very much for giving me

Some daily situations – at work and in our personal lives – require more formal language. And this is often true in writing.

For example, if you’re expressing thankfulness or gratitude in a speech at a wedding, a formal reception or networking event, or in a lecture, it would be appropriate to choose more formal language.

Or if you’re writing thank you notes to friends and family members; if you’re sending an email to say thank you to a new client; or writing to another company, again, you’ll want to use these more formal expressions.

I’m so grateful for… / I’m so thankful for… / Many thanks for…

Writing some thank you notes to friends who helped you after the birth of a baby or while you were helping a sick parent?

  • “I’m so grateful for your help. It was a challenging time but you made it easier. Thank you.”
  • “I’m so thankful friends like you.”

I truly appreciate… / Thank you ever so much for… / It’s so kind of you to…

Are you sending an email to everyone on your team at work for working overtime or volunteering to work on a Saturday?

  • “I truly appreciate everyone’s efforts and commitments to our success. Thank you for taking time out of your personal time to meet our deadline.”
  • “It was kind of each of you – and your families – to give up a Saturday to help our company volunteer at the 10km race to benefit cancer research.”

Thank you for going through the trouble to… / Thank you for taking the time to…

Did one of your business contacts take some extra time to give you some information you needed? Send an email to say thank you…

  • “Hi, Samantha. I just wanted to send a note to say thank you for taking the trouble to answer all my questions. I know you are busy and I appreciate that you took the time to respond quickly. Thank you.”

I’m eternally grateful for… / I cannot thank you enough for… / I want you to know how much I value… / Words cannot describe how grateful I am for… / Please accept my deepest thanks for…

Sometimes we have very difficult times in our lives. Maybe a loved one becomes ill. Someone passes away. Or perhaps you lose a job.

Tragedies happen. These can be terribly stressful times. If you are writing someone to thank them to help you, these expressions are most appropriate.

  • “I’m eternally grateful to you for providing dinners to my family while I was in the hospital. I felt comforted knowing they were well-feed.”
  • “Words cannot express how grateful I am for your help after my mom passed away. I was devastated and you helped me get through each day. ”

Mr President, thank you very much for giving me this opportunity to explain my vote on this important issue. Señor Presidente, muchas gracias por darme esta.

Saying thank you is a simple and often overlooked way to show someone how much they mean to you. The gesture is made even more special when you’ve taken the time to include a small gift and handwrite a nice message in order to express your gratitude.

We’ve shared some of our favorite ways to say thank you that are sure to put a smile on anyone’s face.

To say thank you for a thoughtful gift

Did you just have a birthday, wedding or baby shower and want to thank your party guests for showering you with gifts? A thoughtful note is a great way to share your gratitude. Make the sentiment really special by telling them specifically how they’ve brightened your day. Don’t be afraid to have some fun or admit how excited you are to use their gift!

Start your letter with one of these sentiments:

  • I just wanted to write to say thanks a bunch for the gift!
  • Thank you for the beautiful blouse, I can’t wait to wear it this weekend.
  • Thank you for coming to my birthday party, it was more special getting to celebrate with you.
  • The new picture frame will look perfect in my college dorm room, thank you!
  • This is exactly what I’ve been wanting, thank you so much for getting it for me.
  • Thank you for the gift card, it will help me get everything I need for my upcoming move.
  • The coffee mug you sent is so me. Thank you for making my mornings brighter.
  • I’m so grateful for the housewarming gift you sent, our place is one step closer to feeling like home because of it.
  • I know you spent a lot of time picking out the perfect gift for me and I feel blessed to have such a thoughtful friend in my life.

To express your gratitude for a kind deed

Whether a friend, family member or stranger has gone out of their way for you, surprise them with a small gift to show that their kind deed didn’t go unnoticed! A candle or incense are both inexpensive options to add to your thank you note for a little something extra.

You can customize one of these for your situation:

  • I can’t even begin to explain how much your help meant to me.
  • Thank you for always stepping in to help when I need you most.
  • Thank you for taking the time to help me, it really meant a lot.
  • Thank you for sharing your home with me, I had such a great time catching up.
  • My stomach (and I) want to thank you for that delicious meal.
  • You made me feel so at home that I forgot I wasn’t! Thank you for having me.
  • Thank you for putting a roof over my head this weekend, it was so kind to invite me into your home.
  • Thank you for hosting my event, my day just wouldn’t have been the same without you!
  • Thank you for the raving letter of recommendation, I can’t wait to start my new job.

To tell a friend “thank you for being you”

They are your partner in crime and have your back no matter what. Let your bestie know how much they mean to you by putting together a gift basket that’s just for them. Customize it with their favorite drink, a gift card to that boutique they always talk about, or items like bubble bath, an eye mask and slippers for a relaxing night in. Play with silly puns or recount your favorite memory with them to show how much their friendship means to you.

Here are some other ways to let a friend know how great they are:

  • Have a drink on me.
  • You’re a peach! Thanks for your help.
  • Where would I be without a friend like you?
  • What you did for me was kind of a big deal. Thank you.
  • How did you become so wise? Thanks again for all of your advice.
  • You are my angel, thank you for your kindness and compassion.
  • You know all my secrets and weird quirks, yet you’re still my bestie. Thank you.
  • I don’t say it enough, but I just wanted to say thank you for always having my back.
  • Do you have to train to be so amazing? Because you are definitely the best friend anyone could ask for!
  • You’re my partner in crime, thanks for always supporting my crazy ideas!
  • You are a ray of sunshine to me and everyone else around. Thank you for brightening my day!
  • Words can’t even express my thanks, but I hope this gift will help show you how grateful I am for a friend like you.
  • Thank you for helping me through that difficult time. If you ever need a shoulder to cry on, I have two for you.

To say thank you to your significant other

Do you have a spouse or significant other that is always surprising you with kind acts? Take the time to tell them how much you love them by baking a sweet treat or buying them their favorite dessert. Add a short note with three reasons why they are amazing and watch their smile light up the room.

Get inspired to tell your sweetie how much you love them with one of these kind thoughts:

  • I appreciate you.
  • I’d be lost without you.
  • You make my heart smile.
  • Thank you for being my superhero!
  • How can I make your day amazing?
  • How did I get so lucky? I’m so grateful you choose to be with me.
  • I have a big bear hug waiting for you the next time I see you!
  • You’re the sweetest! Thank you for everything you do!
  • I already made dinner tonight, thank you for being so wonderful.
  • When I think about things I’m grateful for, you are always on the list.
  • It’s a rare thing to find someone as generous and kind as you. Thank you.
  • Thank you for supporting my dreams, no matter what. I couldn’t ask for a better partner.
  • Just when I thought I couldn’t love you more, you did that. Thank you for being so amazing!

To say thank you to your boss or colleague for their support

There are a few different moments when it’s appropriate to take the time to tell your boss or colleagues how much you appreciate them and their work. Maybe you just finished a project that you know you couldn’t have done without a co-worker’s expertise or your manager just lent valuable advice. Say thank you by giving some savory snacks to the person that needs a mid-afternoon pick me up or a new coffee mug to the early riser.

Here are a few ideas for telling someone that you are grateful for their contributions:

  • Thank you for helping me with this project.
  • Thanks again for meeting with me today.
  • Thank you for taking the time to explain this.
  • Thank you for leading by example.
  • Thank you for being such a great leader. The other team members and I are really inspired by your actions.
  • I truly enjoy being a part of your team.
  • Thank you for being such an inspiration to me and others around you.
  • Thank you for entrusting me with this project.
  • I appreciate your dedication.
  • Thank you for sharing your honest feedback about the project.
  • We are grateful for your dedication to the team and company.
  • Thank you for making this such an awesome place to work every day!
  • Thank you for having confidence in my abilities.
  • I really appreciate your flexibility and willingness to work with me on this.
  • Thank you for the opportunity to work here. I will do my very best to exceed your expectations of my abilities.
  • Thank you for your email, it was really appreciated.
  • Thanks for your attention on the matter.
  • I want to express my gratitude for everything that you’ve helped me achieve here.
  • I appreciate you considering me for this position. I look forward to hearing from you.
  • Thank you for sharing your opinion. I value your honesty and will respond as quickly as possible.
  • Thank you for always going above and beyond to ensure the success of a project.
  • I appreciate your hard work and want you to know it doesn’t go unnoticed.

Other ways to say thank you in any occasion

  • I appreciate what you did.
  • Thank you for thinking of me.

"Looking at the feedback, all the participants rated the session as "excellent", and some of the words they used to describe it include; thoughtful, inspiring, fun, meaningful and motivating."

MR Edinburgh Business School

The presenter Steve was amazing. Excellent presentation, organization, and energy. Bravo!

CH University of Cambridge

A.M.A.Z.I.N.G ! I was quite impressed about the energy and devotion of the presenter, you could tell that he was truly passionate about what he does and that itself is captivating!!!

GY TUD

I am hearing some fantastic feedback about yesterday's workshop.  One student even said that you are the best presenter they have ever heard.

JS EAO DTP

One of the best classes I've attended...ever.

RN RHUL

Thank you so much for the training session...I really enjoyed and learnt lots from it.
This is quite refreshing...as we are often 'forced' to undertake statutory training sessions that are completely useless and irrelevant to what we do. This was an optional session, but it was the most useful I've had in the last eight years! So thank you!

MG (Senior Lecturer) University of Westminster

The most interesting, productive and enjoyable staff development event that I've ever been to. Thank you.

MD Lecturer Brunel University

Thanks for the inspiring talk and the wonderful workshop. It was given in a very visually appealing form. Who doesn't like to read interesting illustrations? It was very well designed, practical and valuable for anyone who wants to enhance their understanding about writing.

LZ Confucius Institute for Business and Communication

Just a few quick lines to thank you for the excellent seminar – Giving Presentations. It was absolutely superb. I’ve been to quite a number of these seminars on doing presentations (in a University as well as a business context) – but yours was the best one so far, by a long margin.

MK Durham University

This was an extremely informative, enjoyable and above all valuable session and I look forward to putting some of the techniques I've learned today into practice.

SM City University London

Many thanks for the seminar today; I found it very interesting and incredibly useful. I’m about to transition from a senior PDRA to a tenure-track fellow so found everything particularly relevant to me. I will definitely put the ideas into practise.

NL PDRA University of Liverpool

Just wanted to say how good your workshop was. In fact, it's the best I’ve ever been to.

MA Programme Leader University of Dundee

You could clearly see that Steve was passionate about the subject and it reflected in the quality of teaching. Faultless.

EC Researcher KCL

Thank you for sharing an inspiring learning experience.

KA PDRA University of York

Many thanks for your brilliant session today. It must have been the best training session I've had throughout my study here.

NM Researcher University of Nottingham

Would I recommend this session? Unequivocally - to any academic.

FM Principal Investigator

This was the most successful training event I have attended; your understanding of the challenges of our particular project and your skill in engaging the participants was outstanding.

RN Research Professor

It don't remember ever going on a course here where I stayed awake and alert and interested all day. I know this seems doesn't seem like much, but this was a great session. Thank you.

RF Program Administrator

I just wanted to jot you a note of thanks to say how much I enjoyed your workshop on Conference Posters this morning. It was certainly more lively and engaging than I had hoped for - how did you manage to bring such charisma to poster design?!

SP Researcher

Just wanted to thank you for a great session - it has helped me focus and will be a great asset to me. I very nearly didn't attend because of a looming deadline , but I believe the hours spent will be repaid many times over!

RS Research Supervisor

Your first opening question changed my perspective on things entirely. Real insight and complete focus. Thank you.

GC Section Head

Thanks so much for your session. It really motivated me to change my approach to networking and academic conferences this summer. I can honestly say that putting your tips and tools into practice made me feel more confident, helped me to get more feedback on my work from senior people and allowed me to figure out a networking style that I'm finally comfortable with.

AB Judge Business School

Thanks again for today's workshop. I have attended several similar sessions in recent years. Yours is by far the best. Your approach has caused me to ask myself how to derive personal lessons from the material, and that has not happened very often before....

GC Research Professor

Thank you so much for the most interesting and inspiring workshop! I didn't only enjoy it but have tried to practise it. I felt lost in the midst of things and not sure what I was after. Now I feel more confident to do something. It's such a great feeling!

SML Research Student

What struck me most was how aware he seemed to be of everything that was occurring in the room. The real benefit came where he managed to help us open up discussions of what everyone was thinking… but no one was saying.

JPR Project Manager

I learned more in one afternoon with you than in the entire “Academic Development” programme that we are forced to do here. You’ve made me question my views on training. Thank you.

RG Lecturer and PhD Supervisor

I found your session on Saturday very useful indeed, to the extent that I haven't stopped thinking and rethinking so much of what you said. I am already working on some short term objectives which I have set myself and have organised another meeting with my supervisor. I feel so much more positive and optimistic now and certainly have managed to get rid of that dreaded feeling of isolation which can really pull me down

PR Research Student

I wanted to email you to say how interesting and informative I found the Giving Conference Presentations course yesterday. It was supportive, fun, answered all of my queries and provided more information on top. I would recommend this course for any academic

PB Research Staff

Thanks for the thesis course that I came on before the summer. I learned stuff that morning that I guess I really should have known before. I just submitted my thesis, so I’m celebrating! Your course should be compulsory – and I’ve told that to my supervisor!

MP Post Doc (Pending)

I’m just writing to say that, of all the sessions I’ve ever been to, this was by far the best.

DW Research Technician

Thanks for a really interesting day yesterday. I've been on two of your courses now and what works for me is the fact that they are different to the usual course format- more interactive and tailored to what individual participants want.

NK Research Student

The workshop was directed with real efficiency and yet, in the space of that relatively short time, you managed to achieve a warm and genuine relationship with each student, making us feel relaxed about airing problems and helping us arrive at possible solutions.

MO Research Student

Last year I took part in your Managing Research course and I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for it. I found the questions you asked and tasks you gave us very inspiring. I gained so much from it and my first half year of my PhD programme certainly would not have been the same without it! I kept minutes from the workshop which I still use.

JP Research Staff

… thanks for the course that you ran about finishing the PhD. I was having a hard time and wondering if it was worth it. The ideas, tactics, techniques and support that I got from that afternoon were probably the difference between quitting and staying. Anyway, I got through my viva successfully yesterday – and I wanted to thank you.

LM Post-Doc

Thank you so much dear boss for taking a chance on me and teaching me that there Thank you so much for giving me an extended leave of absence when my.

Thank Someone For an Appointment, Interview, or Meeting

When a friend does something for you, it is important to say thank you. This is a fundamental aspect of courtesy, but sometimes it is hard to know what to say.

It is important to remember that your friends will be happy to get your message and will not be judging you for what it says. The best thing to do is to make your message match what your friend did for you. For a small favor, a short message is just fine. For a larger favor, longer messages more appropriate. It is also important to specifically mention what you are thanking your friend for.

Below are some samples of thank you messages for your friends:

#1: Thank you so much for being there for me last night. I really needed someone to talk to, and you gave me some very good advice. I am feeling much better today thanks to your help. You are a great friend.

#2: We love the gift that you gave us for our wedding. You put a lot of thought into it, and it will come in very useful. Thank you very much.

#3: I am so grateful for all of your help moving and for letting me use your truck. You made what would have been a very difficult task a lot easier. I also enjoyed spending time with you.

#4: Thank you for coming and feeding my cats while I was away. They seemed happy and well cared for when I came home. I am sure they appreciated it as well.

#5: I know that I can never repay you for your kindness and all that you have done for me, but if you ever need anything from me, please ask. You have been a dear friend, and I thank you so much.

#6: Thank you so much for the beautiful gift. I will treasure it always. You always know just the right thing to give to me.

#7: I read the book that you recommended. It was really interesting, and I think it will be helpful. Thank you so much.

#8: I wanted to send you to this note to thank you for the interesting conversation we had last night. It has given me a lot to think about. You are very wise.

#9: I had such a wonderful time with you last night, and the food was wonderful. Thank you so much for inviting me to dinner.

#10: Here is a check to pay you back for the money that you loaned me. Thank you so much. You are a lifesaver.

#11: You will never know just how much you did for me. I could not have managed without you. You are the best friend a person could have. Thank you so much.

#12: I am so lucky for your friendship. You are there for me whenever I need you with a helping hand or a word of advice. I know how busy you are, but you always take the time to give to others, including me. Yesterday was but one of many days in which you stopped what you are doing so that you could help me out. Thank you so much.

#13: There are not enough words for me to express just how grateful I am to you. You help me so much last week. Thank you, thank you, and thank you again.

#14: Thank you for coming to my engagement party. You are a dear friend to me, and it meant so much to me to have you there.

#15: It seems like I am always saying thank you to you. You do so much for me, and you ask for so little. I value your friendship so much. If ever you need anything from me, please do not hesitate to ask.

#16: I am writing this note because I am thinking about how grateful I am to you. You are a dear friend to me. Your wisdom and gentle humor always make me feel better when I am sad or upset. Thank you so much.

#17: I just received the package with the beautiful scarf that you knitted for me. It is so exciting when somebody makes something for me by hand. It is just perfect, and it will look so good with my coat. Thank you very much.

#18: Thank you for very much for introducing me to your friend. We have been seeing each other every night for the past couple of weeks. He may be the love of my life.

#19: I know that we do not always agree, but I really appreciate the fact that you will tell me what you think. You have given me a lot to consider. Thank you very much.

#20: It is very rare that you meet somebody who will stand by you no matter what. I have found such a person in you. Thank you so much for your friendship over these years.

#21: I know that I have not been the easiest person to be around recently. Even so, you have stuck by me, and I am so grateful for you for that. Thank you for your patience and your kindness.

#22: Thank you for the beautiful birthday present that you sent me. I love it so much. It was such a thoughtful and kind gift.

#23: I do not know what I could have done to deserve such a wonderful friend. You are helpful and kind and a lot of fun to be with. Thank you so much.

#24: Thank you for putting up with me for several days when I needed a place to stay. I am so grateful for your kindness and your hospitality.

#25: Thank you so much for the graduation gift. Thank you also for the help and encouragement you have given me through these years while I have been in school. I do not think I could have gotten through it without your encouragement and support. You have been a wonderful friend to me.
