Welcome to the Thank A Veteran Program

The Thank A Vet Program was conceived as a way of giving back to the veterans who have served our country through the armed forces. This program extends to all branches of the military and offers our service men and women an opportunity to receive our thanks through discounts at participating merchants like yours.

Saying "thank you" is easy and completely voluntary with the Thank A Vet Program.

To enroll, merchants should:

  • Read, fill out, sign and submit the Merchant Participation Form
  • Email [email protected] to have the participating merchant Thank A Veteran decal sent out and place in a visible area
  • Offer a discount to any veteran who presents the County Clerk-issued Thank A Veteran ID card

The veteran ID card is issued after that veteran files his or her DD-214 Separation papers with the County Clerk’s Office. Both the card and the filing are free of charge to the Veteran. DD-214 papers are non-public records and are filed with our office for safekeeping. These records are viewable ONLY by the veteran and his or her immediate family.

The benefits of participation are rewarding for both merchant and veteran:
  • Veterans are shown gratitude for their sacrifices and loyalty to country through a discount at participating merchants
  • Merchants are given an opportunity to give back to our veterans
  • Participating merchants will be listed on the County Clerk’s website

A brochure that details the program’s purpose and benefits, along with the enrollment form, and merchant decal can be found in the Thank A Vet folder. If you'd like more information about the program, please email us at [email protected]

Thank you again for helping to give back to those who have served us.>

Great flag - many compliments on it. Proud to fly this in my front yard. Veterans that I don't know have stopped if I was in the front of the house to thank ME for.

Our nation’s Veterans service in our military and sacrifice for the common good represents the highest of American ideals. We are proud to partner with local merchants in Guilford County to celebrate and honor their service. We have approximately 40,000 Veterans in our area.

The Guilford County Register of Deeds is providing Veterans with photo ID cards that can be used for discounts at participating businesses in Guilford County. Our Discount Program has two primary goals: 1) Encourage veterans to register their original DD Form 214 and 2) Obtain benefits for veterans through local businesses. The Veteran Discount Program is free to Veterans and to our businesses partners.

Current List of Participating County Merchants

Our hours for issuing the cards are 8:00am – 12:00pm and 2:00pm – 4:00pm. We are issuing at both the Greensboro Office and our High Point Office.

Greensboro: 201 W. Market Street, on the 1st floor of the BB&T Bank Building
High Point: 325 E Russell Avenue, Room 155

To be issued an ID card, a Veteran will need to bring the following:

  • A valid state-issued driver’s license or identification card; military ID card, etc. (it must have the Veteran’s picture);
  • Veteran’s original DD Form 214. Note: If you have previously recorded your DD Form 214 here at our office, then we will verify we have it in our records before issuing your ID Card.

We are asking Businesses to Join the Effort!

The Register of Deeds encourages all Guilford County businesses to participate. Please Complete Merchant Form as soon as possible.

A listing of the participating businesses will be on the Guilford County Register of Deeds website. Discounts may be a percentage of the sale or a specific dollar amount (both can be with restrictions), if applicable or you may want to offer an incentive (gift or gift card) to the Veteran. We are appreciative of any level of participation possible.

We will send each business a sign to display showing our Veterans and your customers that you participate in our program that supports Veterans.

I am excited to introduce to you a program new to Orleans County. It's called the “ Thank a Veteran Discount Program” and this is how it will work. All eligible.

Thank a Vet Program

Attention all veterans in Chatham County! Starting Nov. 1, 2016, you can now register your Military Discharge Papers (DD Form 214)at no cost in the county Register of Deeds Office and earn discounts offered by local businesses. The new Thank a Vet Program is a collaboration of the Register of Deeds Office, County Administration and local businesses.

“We hope that the discounts at local businesses will encourage more veterans to file their discharge papers with our office,” said Register of Deeds Lunday A. Riggsbee. “If veterans misplace their papers, it is a difficult and slow process to obtain replacement copies.”

The Register of Deeds offices across the state have been recording the DD Form 214 military discharge papers since the early 1940s. However, many veterans never take advantage of this service. “These records are secure. By law, only the veterans, widows, widowers, or VA officer can obtain copies of the recorded papers.

The Thank a Vet Program will provide a special photo ID card to any veteran who has filed their DD Form 214 in the Chatham County Register of Deeds Office. The ID card can be presented at specified local businesses to earn a discount.

“We believe that doing this is a great way for our county government and local businesses to honor and celebrate our veterans,” Riggsbee said.

Many Chatham County businesses are participating by offering discounts to those veterans who present their “Thank You for Your Service” Veterans Photo ID card. All participating businesses can be found at this link. The Veterans’ Discount Program is totally free to veterans and to our business partners.

NEW!!! LINK TO LOCAL PARTICIPATING BUSINESSES:

More than 50 businesses in Chatham County have signed up to offer discounts to veterans with a Thank a Vet Photo ID Card. The card isn’t an official government-issued identification, but it will secure the discounts at participating businesses. Businesses interested in participating should call 919-542-8235. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE CURRENT LIST.

Beginning Nov. 1, 2016, the county will provide the needed photo ID for all veterans who record their military discharge papers in the county’s Register of Deeds office. .

Three major kickoff dates are slated for Nov. 1-4, Nov. 7 and Nov. 10, 2016. Be sure to arrive between 9 am and 4 pm. If you have already recorded your DD Form 214 in Chatham County, please come visit and ask to have your photo ID made.

After the kickoff dates, veterans can visit every Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm to record papers and obtain their photo IDs. There may be busy periods, so there may be times that an appointment will be needed.
