But what about the phone interview? Is a thank you note customary…or required after a preliminary phone screening interview?
In today’s profession, it is not common or customary for a candidate to send a thank you note to an interviewer after an initial phone screen. Nor do the vast majority of employers expect it. Screening interviews are typically the first step in an interview process – a high-level 30-minute conversation covering the nuts and bolts of a candidate’s practice. But in the event you happen to encounter the employer who does care, a neglected thank you will either disadvantage your candidacy or spike it altogether. Keep it short. Recruiters and hiring managers are short on time. A thank-you email after a phone interview should be no more than 100 words.

There's no hard-and-fast rule for how long it will take for a potential employer to get back to you. Some will follow up immediately and others will take a week or two. You have control over neither. What you do have control over is how often you reach out.

Keep the email simple and concise while showing that you're interested in the job. You're waiting as patiently as possible to hear back, but your phone just isn't ringing. Did you not make the cut for an in-person interview? Or is the hiring manager just swamped with other duties and unable to call back just yet? It's perfectly acceptable to follow up on the interview to see what's happening.
Give the hiring manager some time to call you back. If you asked in the phone interview when the company plans to set up interviews, you have a sense of the timeline. Don't send a follow-up email two days after the interview if the hiring manager said it would be a week. Once the expected timeline passes, you can check in with a follow-up email. If you don't know the timeline, it's usually safe to send an email a week after the phone interview.
